Become a Coach
You don’t need experience. You don’t need a rugby background. You just need to care about kids, community and Hackney — we’ll handle the rest.
Five reasons it changes everything
- You’ll change a kid’s life, every weekend. Hackney RFC is more than rugby — it’s where young people build confidence, belonging and resilience, with coaches as the catalyst.
- You’ll gain a community. “Fellowship is Life” is how our coaches back one another — lasting friendships form while you serve players.
- Free qualifications, real skills, a CV boost. We fund your RFU Level 1 certification, plus first aid, safeguarding and leadership training — recognised by employers.
- Be part of something East London needs. 60 years in the community, with inclusive, diverse programming so every child gets a welcoming way in.
- You’ll never coach alone. New coaches are mentored by experienced ones and supported through the whole RFU pathway.
No more excuses
“I’ve never played rugby” — none needed; people skills matter more. “No coaching experience” — most of our best coaches started with none. “No time” — many coach only Sunday mornings. “I won’t fit in” — we actively welcome women and people from Black and South Asian backgrounds.
“The best coaches aren’t the ones who know the most about rugby. They’re the ones who know how to make a kid feel ten feet tall.”
